SCC lone survivor in baseball title race
For the past two high school baseball seasons, St. Charles Catholic had been eliminated in the quarterfinal rounds of the Class 3A playoffs.
On May 13, the Comets have the opportunity to take a step closer to a state championship by winning a semifinal round game in Class 2A.
The opponent is one the Comets have seen three times before, District 12-2A rival and No. 6 seed Riverside Academy.
The two will meet in a 1 p.m. game at Sulphur’s McMurray Baseball Complex. The winner will move to the finals to face either No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas or No. 5 Opelousas Catholic on May 17.
The LaPlace school is the last of the local Catholic schools remaining in the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA baseball playoffs.
St. Charles, the No. 2 seed, has beaten the No. 6 Rebels two of the three times they have met this season, first by a score 3-0 in a Lutcher tournament. The two split their district encounters with Riverside winning, 7-6, at home, then losing, 1-0, at the Comets’ field.
St. Charles (28-8) advanced through three rounds of the playoffs by defeating East Feliciana, Sterlington and Menard. Riverside takes a 23-10 record into the semis.
