Mt. Carmel, Ursuline in Girls’ Top 28 field

Mount Carmel and Ursuline academies have advanced to the LHSAA girls’ basketball state tournament, marking the first time in seven years two teams from the Archdiocese of New Orleans have advanced to the semifinal round together.

Mount Carmel made it as the No. 2 seed in Class 5A. Ursuline went in as the No. 8 seed. Both earned a berth in the semifinals by winning three playoff games.

Appearances by the two mark just the third time since 2004 that two local girls’ Catholic schools have earned their way into the semifinals. The last time was in 2009 when Archbishop Chapelle won the 5A championship by defeating Lafayette as a No. 1 seed, and Ursuline lost to Capitol in the 3A semifinal round.

Dominican and Cabrini advanced together in 2004. That year the Crescents won the 4A title and Dominican lost to West Monroe in the 5A championship game.

Mount Carmel last won the Class 5A crown in 2014 by defeating Destrehan, 69-60.
