Catholic League tournament tips off this week
Ursuline Academy and St. Mary’s Dominican will co-host the third annual Catholic League Volleyball Tournament, which was scheduled to make its first serve on Sept. 17.
The three-day tournament features a large field of 16 schools, including six from the Archdiocese of New Orleans, led by Division IV state champion Pope John Paul II.
Joining the Jaguars are Archbishop Hannan, De La Salle, Academy of the Sacred Heart and the two co-hosts.
Joining the local teams will be Ascension Catholic, Catholic of New Iberia, Catholic of Pointe Coupee, Central Catholic of Morgan City, E.D. White, Notre Dame, St. John, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Thomas More and Division III champion Teurlings Catholic.
Teurlings defeated Ursuline in three close games to win the 2014 division title.
Ursuline will host matches on Sept. 17 at 4 and 5:15 p.m.
The tournament continues on Sept. 18 with three matches at Ursuline and three at Dominican with starting times at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7
Nine matches are slated at Dominican on the tourney’s final day, beginning at 8 a.m. Three courts will be set up in the Dominican gym.
Two of the featured matches on the Sept. 19 card will take place on Court 4. The two reigning champions – Pope John Paul II and St.
Thomas More – play at noon. The Jaguars started the week with a 10-0 record. St. Thomas More is undefeated in eight matches.
Academy of the Sacred Heart (7-1) will also play Pope John Paul earlier that day at 8 a.m., and later in the afternoon, Dominican (4-5) will go against St. Thomas More. That match is set for 4 p.m.
Another unbeaten team is Hannan at 4-0. And the Lady Hawks have Saturday matches against E.D. White at 10 a.m. and Catholic of Pointe Coupee at 1 p.m.
Ursuline (8-3) will host De La Salle (3-4) on Sept. 17, then play two matches on Sept. 19.
