State tournament next for local American Legion teams

The brief respite is over for three district champions who will join the field of eight in the American Legion state baseball tournament, which will be played July 18-22 at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium in New Orleans.

District champs Retif Oil (Jesuit), Refuel (Archbishop Shaw) and River Ridge Patriots (John Curtis) qualified for the state tournament without having to compete in last week’s Southeast Regional Tournament.

Also bypassing the regional games were the Gauthier & Amedee team from East Ascension, the Delhomme Drillers from Scott and the Crowley Millers.

Teams competing in the regional tournament had to endure several days of rain-outs, postponements and lightning delays.

Mandeville-based LLOG Exploration on July 12 ended Peake BMW’s perfect run through the tournament by handing the team from Brother Martin an 11-8 setback.

Peake defeated Deanie’s Seafood, 10-2, and LLOG eliminated Otto Candies (Hahnville) a day earlier.

St. Charles Catholic-based Townsend Homes was schedules to meet LLOG on July 13 with the winner facing Peake BMW for the championship.
