2015 Clarion Herald’s Elite Boys' Basketball Team

There were few signs of global warming this winter in the local Catholic schools’ basketball arenas – especially when the state playoffs tipped off. Then the big chill set in.
Of the seven teams whose power ratings earned playoff berths, three fell in the bi-district round, three more were eliminated in the regional round, and the lone survivor of the cold spell on the courts was De La Salle, which defeated South Beauregard and Patterson before going out in the quarterfinal round to Rayville, the class 3A No. 2 seed.
District 9-5A champion and No. 4 seed St. Augustine was upset by No. 29 Carencro, and Archbishop Rummel and Jesuit also fell in the opening round. Brother Martin, St. Paul’s and Archbishop Hannan followed in the second round.
But despite the post-season disappointments, the schools turned out an exceptional group of athletes, led by St. Augustine’s 6-6 power forward Charles Brown, who is recognized as the Outstanding Player on the Clarion Herald’s 2015 Elite boys’ team.

Quality coaching has always been the hallmark within the Archdiocese of New Orleans. And of all the talented men in charge, De La Salle’s Paul Kelly is singled out as Coach of the Year after leading the Cavaliers to a 24-6 record in a magical season that took his team as far as the Class 3A quarterfinals.

Coach of the Year

Paul Kelly and his staff directed De La Salle through a 24-win season and into the Class 3A quarterfinal round. The Cavaliers lost just six games and defeated 10 opponents who boasted winning records.

Outstanding Player

Charles Brown, a 6-6 senior power forward, was the leading scorer and rebounder for District 9-5A champion St. Augustine.
