Volley pairings


They will be serving, blocking and digging from morning 'til night.

Ten teams representing schools in the Archdiocese of New Orleans with make their first serve in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s state volleyball tournament, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, on Thursday.

The first match in the Pontchartrain Center pits Archbishop Hannan against University Lab of Baton Rouge in a Division IV quarterfinal round best-of-five contest at 9 a.m. The Hawks (32-11) are the No. 5 seed. U-Lab (31-11) is No. 4

Two other Division IV matches have No. 1 seed Pope John Paul II (38-5) against No.8 Episcopal of Baton Rouge (24-11) at 10:50 a.m. and No. 10 Academy of the Sacred Heart (19-20 facing No. 2 McGehee (38-4) at 12:40 p.m.

De La Salle (27-13) earned a No. 8 seed in a 12:40 p.m. Division III quarterfinal round match against No. 1 Teurlings Catholic of Lafayette (33-9)

The Lady Cavaliers’ district rival, Ursuline Academy (32-11), the No. 2 seed in Division III, faces No. 7 Iota (32-10) at 2:30 p.m. in another Division III quarterfinal round match.

Cabrini (21-18), a No. 9 seed made it back to the tournament after scoring an upset over No. 8 Central in regional round. Now the Crescents face No. 1 Assumption (36-6) in a 4:20 p.m. match with hopes of advancing to the semifinal round on Friday.

Three more local Catholic schools take to one of three courts at 6:10 p.m.

 St. Scholastica (36-6), the No. 2 seed in Division II, faces St. Michael (26-13).

Academy of Our Lady (31-7), the No. 6 seed in Division II, will face No. 3 St. Thomas More (33-8).

Then No. 9 Archbishop Chapelle (28-17) looks to spring an upset of No. 1 St. Joseph
Academy (42-2), the reigning Division I champion.

One of the final matches of the quarterfinal round brings together District 6-I rivals No. 2 Mount Carmel (43-3) and No. 7 Dominican (26-15) for the third time. Mount Carmel, the 20-13 runner-up, defeated their opponent twice in three games apiece. The first serve will be at approximately 8 p.m.

All semifinal round matches are on Friday and finals on Saturday.
