A simple way to create your Catholic legacy

At The Catholic Foundation, we are blessed to have volunteer board and committee members who are experts in their fields. One of our committee members recently shared a meaningful quote by Ethel Percy Andrus, the foundress of AARP: “What I spent is gone; what I kept, I lost; but what I gave away will be mine forever.”

This quote reminds us that every act of Christian charity is a spiritual enrichment for the helper as well as the receiver of material aid. Grace flows to both the receiver and giver. Importantly, as Ethel Percy Andrus points out, we pass on more than just valuables; we pass on our values and our faith. In this way, we create our legacy.
What will your Catholic legacy be? It may be supporting your parish to preserve our faith for future generations. Or, you might want to ensure that children have access to a Catholic education. Perhaps you want to help people who are homeless or protect the unborn.

There is a simple way to create your legacy that needn’t cost you a penny during your lifetime – leaving a gift to charity through your will.

You do this by identifying:

➤ A specific dollar amount;

➤ A percentage of your estate or the residual of your estate (what is left after other terms of the will have been satisfied).

A gift through your will may be expressed in these words:

I give and bequeath the sum of $______ (or ______ percentage of … or residual of my estate) to The Catholic Foundation of the Archdiocese of New Orleans for the benefit of ___________ parish, school, ministry or other organization for its general purposes (unrestricted) or for __________ program (restricted.)

Each of us has our own individual reasons for leaving a gift in our will, but we are united by our wish to make a difference in the world we leave behind. For us as Catholics, creating this legacy can represent what our faith means for generations to come.
