Sister of Mercy Celeste Thibeaux, a longtime nurse
Sister of Mercy Mary Celeste Thibeaux passed away peacefully May 29 at Canon Hospice. She was 89.
A native of Jeanerette, Louisiana, Sister Mary Celeste was born to Simeon Thibeaux and Elmina Gravelle Thibeaux. She was preceded in death by Sister of Mercy Madeleine, Celeste, Louis, Jerome, Camille, Paul, Bernard and Simeon Thibeaux; Rose Fortier; Marcelle Olivier; and an adopted cousin, Louis LeBlanc. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Sister Celeste entered the Sisters of Mercy on Sept. 8, 1942. She served the community for many years as a teacher and operating room supervisor at Mercy hospitals in New Orleans, Fort Smith, Arkansas, and Laredo, Texas. Other hospital assignments included those in dietetics, administration and serving as a nurse in Vicksburg, Mississippi. After retiring from hospital ministry, Sister Mary Celeste served and delighted in her role as school nurse at Holy Name of Jesus School in New Orleans.
Sister Celeste, who was known for her smile and great sense of humor, was a big fan of the LSU Tigers, Boston Red Sox and New Orleans Saints.
A Mass of Celebration was held at St. Francis Xavier Church on June 4 with Jesuit Father Peter S. Rogers, celebrant, and Msgr. Andrew Taormina, concelebrant. Interment was at St. Patrick Cemetery No. 3.
