Praying for healing
At the annual archdiocesan Mass Oct. 12 for the victims and survivors of violence, Archbishop Gregory Aymond prayed in front of a photographic tableau of loved ones killed by violence.
At top right, Jacqueline Simmons carried a poster of her grandson Edward Isom, who was killed in 2013. At bottom right, Cookie Haensel discussed her daughter Shelly, who was killed in a vehicular homicide in 1995.
“We know that here in the metropolitan area, as in many large cities, so much blood has been spilled on our streets and has stained not just our streets but our lives,” the archbishop said. “I’m afraid at times we might become numb. ... You and I as followers of Jesus cannot grow accustomed to violence and murder. We know that is not the way of God, and it cannot be the norm of our community.”
