St. Ann National Shrine to hold 90th anniversary July 28
St. Ann Church and National Shrine will celebrate the Feast of St. Ann and the 90th anniversary of the shrine July 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. at St. Ann Church, 3601 Transcontinental Drive in Metairie.
The evening will begin with praise, worship and witness at 6 p.m., followed by Mass at 7 p.m. and concluding with the novena to St. Ann.
The parish of St. Ann was established by Archbishop Antoine Blanc in 1852. In 1902, a special shrine was built near St. Ann's Church, and the solemn novena to St. Ann, the mother of Mary, were begun.
Pope Pius XI decreed the shrine in 1926 as the National Shrine of St. Ann for the United States.
St. Ann Church in Metairie was renamed in honor of St. Ann in the early 1970s and a new national shrine was constructed at its current location in Metairie.
