Funeral arrangements for Jane Silva announced
A funeral Mass for Mary Jane Capella Silva, the retired principal of St. Michael Special School, will be celebrated by Archbishop Gregory Aymond Friday, Sept. 7, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Dominic Church, 775 Harrison Avenue, New Orleans.
Mrs. Silva, 60, had served for 35 years as a volunteer, teacher, assistant principal and principal at the school founded in 1965 by her maternal aunt, School Sister of Notre Dame Mary Lillian McCormack.
After Sister Lillian’s death in 2000, Mrs. Silva served as assistant principal and then became principal in 2003. She retired recently due to lengthy battle with cancer.
Mrs. Silva touched the lives of many with love and will be remembered by those who knew her as a tireless worker, a devoted mother, a beloved sister, a loyal sister and a special gift to her students at St. Michael School.
She was the second of 10 children born to the late Bernard J. Capella Jr. and Lillian McCormack Capella and is survived by her two sons, Gary M. Silva Jr. and Kevin J. Silva; and by her nine siblings, Julie Vanderbrook, Kay McKissack, Jack Capella, Claire Bennett Eileen Schulin, Carol Barbera, Jimmy Capella, Anne Dunlap and Thomas Capella.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Sept. 6, from 6-8 p.m. at Greenwood Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Blvd., New Orleans, and Friday, Sept. 7, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at St. Dominic Church. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 a.m.
